Father of Nuclear Physics
Scientist Ernest Rutherford, born near Nelson, went to Cambridge in England after studying at Christchurch University. The most famous achievement in his long and distinguished career was discovering how to split the atom. On his death in 1937 Rutherford was buried in Westminster Abbey, in London, having been knighted and made a peer. Something So Strong
Singer-songwriter Neil Finn (1958- ) joined his older brother Tim's band Split Enz before founding the even more successful Crowded House in 1985. The group enjoyed worldwide success into the 1990s with its albums, singles, and concerts. Finn's brilliantly crafted melodic songs have been likened to those of The Beatles, but his use of New Zealand idiom gives his sound its own distinctive edge.
Jean Batten (1909-82)
A world famous aviatrix, Batten became the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia, in 1934. In 1936 she was the first person to fly solo from England to New Zealand, taking 11 days.
Sir Peter Blake (1949- )Born in Auckland, Sir Peter is renowned for his victories in the Whitbread round-the-world yacht race, his record-breaking trip around the world in a catamaran, and leadership of the America's Cup campaign, which New Zealand won in 1995 and is defending in 2000.
Sir Edmund Hillary (1919- )Hillary is recognized as the country's most respected hero. He was the first man to conquer Mount Everest - in 1953 - and has been involved with other Himalayan and Antarctic expeditions.
Katherine Mansfield (1888-1923)One of the 20th-century's greatest short-story writers, Mansfield located many of her fictions in Wellington and other New Zealand settings.
Arthur Lydiard (1917- )Lydiard revolutionized endurance training in the 1950s and 1960s, coaching many athletes to Olympic medals. He also helped inspire the worldwide jogging phenomenon and introduced running for cardiac rehabilitation.
Dame Kiri Te Kanawa (1944- )New Zealand's most famous soprano was born in Gisborne. Renowned as a leading international opera singer for more than three decades, Dame Kiri now performs regularly in New Zealand.
